Egg Carton Activities

We did this marble activity last year - I don't even remember where I first saw it.  For my 3-year old, it was an activity to identify lowercase letters.  I wrote the lower case letters in the egg carton and put a marble inside.  He would close it, shake it up, and wherever the marble landed, he would have to name the letter.  Great fun, and great letter identification practice!

My 5-year old was just learning about simple addition.  I wrote the numbers 1-3 in the boxes (I didn't want the sums to get too high at the time - but you can go as high as you like).  He put 2 marbles in, shook it up, and added the two  numbers together where the marbles landed.  You  can also do subtraction, but you need to remind the child to subtract the smaller number from the larger one.
There are probably many applications of this - write sight words inside to read, or larger math facts.  For younger children, it could be as simple as colouring the bottom of each in a different colour and identifying it.

Note: please supervise your child very carefully while using the marble.
