Good Tip for Parents of Little Ones

Aside from its crafty, inspiring side, Pinterest has also been the source of many hints and tips.  From house-cleaning to organizing to home remedies, there are great tips out there, so I thought I'd share one.
If you have a young child, it's quite possible you will have to deal with them putting something up their nose: raisins, peas, anything small.  I don't quite understand the appeal of it (Hmmm...let's see if this corn kernel will actually fit inside...).  My oldest child did this at the babysitter's when he was about a year old.  She thought she got most of them out, but later at home I saw one pretty far up.  I tried suctioning it with one of those bulb syringes, but that did nothing.  My husband took him to the walk-in clinic, and the doctor didn't actually do anything, but taught my husband how to get it out.  Now we know for future reference (and with 3 more boys, I'm sure we'll get to use this skill again)!

  • It helps to have two of  you - one to hold the child, and the other to do the work.  It's pretty uncomfortable for your child.  You need to pinch closed the nostril with nothing in it.  Then you cover the child's mouth with  yours and give a sharp breath.  The air should come out the nostril and force out the object.  It may take one or two breaths, but it should work.

Note: this is just a home remedy.  If you have any concerns or questions at all, please speak to your family doctor.
