And it's true. It works, it's easy, and it smells divine.
I pinned a post from 5 Orange Potatoes two weeks ago and meant to make them right away, but all of a sudden my littlest angel decided to start getting me up 5 times a night, so my 'me' time during afternoon naps turned into 'nap' time for me, too.
Anyhow, I whipped these up the other afternoon - what a simple and quick Christmas craft, and it has certainly left a pleasant lingering Christmas-y smell in the house!
I'm going to send you over to 5 Orange Potatoes for her tutorial on it, but I'll leave you with a few thoughts from my end, first.
- Before working with the dough, apply a liberal amount of olive oil to your hands to prevent irritation from the cinnamon.
- It really is best to roll the dough out pretty thin - about 1/4". However, the thinner your dough, the faster you'll need to work to cut your shapes out - I was half way through when both kids woke up, so by the time I got back to the dough after the changing and the bottling, the shapes were a little more likely to break as I pushed them out of the cookie cutters.
- I have regular sized cookie cutters, and then a mini set of Wilton cookie cutters that I bought from Micheal's (for the purpose of Christmas potato printing!) - I really like the mini ones best.
- And of all the shapes that I used, the gingerbread man was my favourite. (or, as my almost-2 year old calls him, 'ginger-spider-man'.)
- I baked them at 250F and flipped them a couple times, but then realized that it made more sense to just set my oven to the lowest setting (around 100F) and leave them be for about 2 hours.
- They look like cookies. Especially to the little Cookie Monsters in the house. Eating too much cinnamon can lead to tummy aches, a sudden drop in blood-sugar levels, and eating a lot over long periods of time could cause liver damage. My little monkey did bite off a gingerbread man's head, and while he's just fine, it's best not to encourage that behaviour!
(Want to make a Candy Serving Tray? Head over here for a tutorial! Seriously - it only takes 8 minutes!)
I've been meaning to try this for a while (as in - YEARS) so maybe this year I'll do it! Love the "Ginger spider-man!"
ReplyDeleteI love this! What a great project for the holidays.
