Pumpkin Craft with the Cutest Story!

This is a fun craft to do with children who are able to use scissors pretty well (ie. Grade 2 and up).  What I do is tell the story first with my paper, then have the children re-tell the story with me while making the craft.
Materials:
  • Orange, black and green construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
Fold the paper in half, hold it with the fold at the bottom, and get your scissors ready to tell the story. I've drawn the lines in silver marker to show where to cut, but whenever I tell the story, I just eyeball it.

"Once upon a time, there was a witch who lived in the woods.  She didn't have a home, so she needed to build herself a house.  She started with the door."  (Hold up paper, cutting two sides of the door out.)  "Because she was a witch, she needed a special door for her hat to fit through."  (Cut the top of the door out on an angle.)

"The witch also had a little dog, who needed his own door.  But since he was a special dog, he needed a special dog door."  (Cut triangle shape for dog door.)

"Next, the witch needed a window.  Of course, she couldn't have just any ordinary shaped window."  (Fold the paper up to the top, cut a larger triangle shape to create a diamond shaped window.)

"Lastly, the witch needed to have a roof."  (Cut each corner off at the top.)

"And here..." (open it - this is the best part)  "is the witch's house!!"
The children are usually pretty excited to see what it ends up being!

Then I pass out the construction paper and retell the story along with the kids.  It's a little tricky though - making sure that the fold is always at the bottom, and doing the step where you fold the paper for the window.

It turns out really well though.  Especially if you glue it onto some black construction paper, add a stem, and you're all set!
