Spooky Fun Fall Snacks - Perfect for Halloween!

Halloween Snacks for Kids: Spooky Fun Fall Treats, Crescent Mummies, Flaky Owl Treats, Apple Race Cars, Oven Spiderdogs, Toothy Apple Smiles
I think that we can all agree that Pinterest is full of amazing & fun food ideas for kids. In the average day, I'll admit - I just don't want to spend the time to make these fun treats. However, one a week for the past few weeks, we've been doing some fun treats for snack or lunch - and the kids get SO excited about them that it's really worth the extra 15 minutes now and again. They're all pretty simple - pick one and give it a try this week! They're a fantastic idea for Halloween Snacks!
Fun, Easy, Quick Snacks for Kids: Apple Race Cars, Flaky Owl Treats, Crescent Mummies, Spiderdogs, Toothy Apple Smiles
These Apple Race Cars are healthy & easy - and were actually the best received. What little kid doesn't want to drive their food around before they eat it?  Get your child involved in making this snack by asking them to put the 'wheels' on the toothpicks.
What you'll need:
  • Apples
  • Grapes
  • Small Toothpicks
  1. Cut & core the apple.
  2. Slice into thick wedges
  3. Cut grapes in half
  4. Poke 1 toothpick through each end of the apple slice.
  5. Place 1/2 grape, cut side facing out, on each end of the toothpics.
  6. Voila: Apple Race Cars!
Spooky Snacks for Kids: Oven Spiderdogs, Crescent Mummies, Toothy Apple Smiles, Flaky Owl Treats, Apple Race Cars
We used to make Spiderdogs at the camp, but it never even occurred to me to try them in the oven until I saw them on Pinterest a few weeks ago! These are super simple.
They're easiest to make with the jumbo size dogs.
What you need:

  • Hot dogs
  • Black decorating gel
  1. Preheat oven to 375.
  2. Cut hotdogs in half.
  3. From the cut side of the dog down, make a slice down the centre, stopping about 1/2" from the bottom of the wiener.
  4. Make 3 identical cuts, this time perpendicular to the first cut.
  5. Splay the spider's 'legs' out on the baking sheet.
  6. Bake for 15 minutes.
  7. Apply two dots of black gel on the head of each spider for the eyes.
The kids had a great time eating "Mummy" at lunch time when we made these Crescent Mummies! They're definitely more time-consuming than regular crescent-wrapped hotdogs, but they ARE a lot more fun. You can find the simple directions over at Life Made Delicious. I did them a little bit differently - here's what we did.
What you need:

  • 1 can refrigerated Crescent Rolls
  • Hotdogs
  • Mustard
  1. Preheat oven to 375.
  2. Open Crescent Rolls, separate along perforated lines, then cut dough into thin (~1/2") strips. for 8 Mummies, you'll need about 4 triangles, cut into strips.
  3. Wind a strip of dough around the very top of a wiener, then continue wrapping it around, leaving a small space for the 'face'. When a strip ends, just pick up another strip, press the end of it into the end of the previous strip, & continue winding til the bottom of the dog.
  4. Place all prepared Mummies on a cookie sheet. Bake for 13-17 minutes, or until golden brown.
  5. Add one dot of mustard for each eye. Serve!

These Toothy Apple Smiles are as creepy in real life as they look in pictures. They're also just as easy to make as they look. Have your little ones climb up onto a chair by the counter & help you stick the teeth onto the lips!
What you need:

  • Apples
  • Peanut butter
  • Mini Marshmallows
  1. Core an apple & slice into thin wedges.
  2. Spread a very thin layer of peanut butter on one side of a an apple wedge.
  3. Place marshmallows tightly together on peanut butter, close to the skin of the apple.
  4. Place another slice (peanut butter side-down) on top of the marshmallows.
  5. Smile!

I'll give you a quick tip on these Flaky Owl Treats: Don't walk too far away when they're in the oven. I missed the timer on them and they ended up being in the oven 50% more than they needed to be, hence the darker colouring.  The kids still LOVED them, though, and had a Hoot eating them! Head over to the Life Made Delicious website for full instructions. They're really easy, and I like the fact that there's some substance to these ones (crescent rolls) in addition to the fun chocolate eyes.
What you need:

  • Refrigerated Crescent Rolls (popped into the freezer for a few minutes)
  • A bit of melted butter
  • Cinnamon & Sugar
  • Chocolate Rosettes
  • Goldfish crackers

Conclusion: It's really fun having special snacks & treats to serve to the kids once in a while - but when I'm babysitting & have up to 5 kids under the age of 5 in the house, we certainly don't have time to do it every day. However, it's a great way to get your kids excited about helping you make things in the kitchen - don't be afraid to ask them to help you!

  1. Those are so cute! I've done the crescent rolls in spirals before, but not like the owls - that looks like fun!
