Our house in the winter time is constantly full of coughs. We have puffers for 3 of the boys, and a diagnosis of "possible asthma." That just means that they end up pretty sick from a common cold, and their coughing is constant. Even throughout the night I hear them coughing and coughing. The puffers seem to help sometime, but I'm always looking for natural ways to help them.
I've heard a lot about honey, and how it's just as effective (if not more so) as cough syrup, and cough syrup shouldn't be given to children under age 6 anyways. We've tried a teaspoon of honey striaght, and that seems to help a bit, as does the honey with cinnamon.
But today the coughing just kept going and going. No one was napping or sleeping, and without that rest, no one was going to get any better. So - time to check out Pinterest!!
I found this post of a cough remedy that uses honey as well as onions. I've heard lots of old wives tales about onions and colds and coughs, so I figured I may as well try this one. Basically, you chop up one onion and put it in a small saucepan. Add enough honey (she said raw honey but I only had regular) to cover it, and add a few medicinal herbs. I only had powdered ginger, so I added 1tsp of that. Let it simmer on very low heat for about 20 minutes, stirring every now and then. Strain it, press it through a sieve and store it covered in a glass container. You can give children 1 tsp of this up to every half hour.
I tasted it, and it was a little strange -tasting, but not horrible. My 4-year old said it was kind of "spicy," and I had to bribe with a Bob the Builder DVD to take the medicine. It's only been about 20 minutes or so, and I've already heard less coughs than before. I like the fact that you can give it so often (hopefully they'll take it). It should be fine to give to kids older than 1 year, and adults can take a larger dose.
Note: Please don't give honey to babies under one year. They have a risk of contracting infant botulism which can be serious.
Head over here for the original post.
Update: It's been about 12 hours since I've been giving this to my boys. Each one had a much better sleep last night that previous nights, and are coughing much less. Still coughing a lot, but less than before. I've started to give it in a syringe so they won't taste it as much, but the younger two (21 months, 3 yrs) don't seem to mind it too much.
Do you have any tried & true home remedies? I 'd love to hear some. At this point, we are open to almost anything!
For more home remedies, check out the post about Ear Infection Remedies.
What I use for sore throats is honey (about a 1/4 cup) mixed with as much cinnamon as I can put in it (4-5 tbsp+) and mix together and give to the kids in spoonfuls as needed. Honey is super great and cinnamon is anti-flammatory. AND! delicious!
ReplyDeleteHope you found something that will help the boys!
My mother in law always tells me to bathe my kids, cover them up with lemon on the chest and all over their body during the day or night, bundle them up, and then bathing them again. We did this and of course my son was a little bit itchy because of the lemon residue but nothing out of the ordinary. His cough went away!! Sounds unreal but it worked for our son.
ReplyDeleteI have never tried this but I had read somewhere if you put Vick Vapor rub on the soles of your feet and cover with socks before you go to bed that it knocks out the coughing.
ReplyDeletei have done this, it works !
Deleteyes it does work!! I do this for my 9 and 5 year old and they sleep through the night no coughing. Now for adults it either works or it doesn't
DeleteWe do this and it works like a charm...the vicks can be super strong if put on the chest and neck and in children can actually induce coughing, but on the feet it is far enough away.
DeleteCan you only use at night or could I put on my son during the day? He's not coughing at night anymore but during the day...
DeleteThanks!
I did it both on my daughter (2 years old) and myself. Vicks somehow gives your feet this warm feeling and you just relax. Both of us did not cough and slept well through the night. I highly recomend it!
DeleteVick on the toes and feet works great! All the sinuses nerve endiings are in the tips of your toes! Just a lil reflexology knowledge!
DeleteI do that for my 6 month old son, just put some on his feet with footy pajamas and it works great
DeleteVicks can actually be harmful to young children. Ever read the ingredients in that stuff. I would never put that on my child! Try essential oils instead.
DeleteWhat essential oils instead of Vicks? Thanks
DeleteEucalyptus, in warm bath water works wonders... add peppermint, rosemary, and lavender, just a drop or two of each in the bath water. It is soothing and smells nice too.
DeleteWhen I was a kid, my grandmother always used onions and honey when we had a cough. She baked it whole in the oven. I have fixed it off and on through the years. Thanks for reminder.
DeleteTHIS IS TRUE I DO IT ALL THE TIME!!!!
DeleteInstead of Vicks, try a teaspoon of olive oil mixed with 5-10 drops of tea tree oil. Apply to bottoms of feet and chest. This is the recipe we have used before, but now that I know the benefits of coconut oil, I would probably use that now.
DeleteLavender and Eucalyptus Homemade Vicks Vaporub
DeleteI do not like to resort to medications and I also do not like to use chemical-laden remedies. I like to go all natural if possible. I grew up with Vicks Vaporub. I came up with my own non-toxic homemade vicks vaporub. It’s awesome and works like a charm. Plus, it makes your skin super soft and helps you fall asleep!
Ingredients:
▪ 1/2 cup shea butter (where to find)
▪ 1/2 cup coconut oil (where to find)
▪ 1/2 tsp vitamin E (to keep the oils from going rancid) (where to find)
▪ 50 drops eucalyptus essential oil (where to find)
▪ 20 drops lavender essential oil (where to find)
Directions:
▪ In a saucepan, melt the shea butter and coconut oil
▪ Whip on high in your mixer until nice and fluffy
▪ Add in Vitamin E and essential oil and continue to mix until well combined
▪ Store in glass container
▪ Lasts several months, even longer if stored in the fridge
▪ Apply to chest as needed for cough and congestion (do not eat)
Sorry, I got this recipe on a blog and don’t remember where....
I have a fantastic cough syrup recipe that my grandfather either made up or got from his ukrainian mother, but im thinking he cooked it up himself...
ReplyDelete1tablespoon each of honey, hot water and vinegar and 1/4 teaspoon each of ginger and cayenne powder. mix it all together and drink. I find the best way to do it is to mix it in a shot glass and drink all at once. just dont liquefy the honey in the microwave or you'll be dealing with major burns too! It's not exactly a kid friendly remedy but it works wonders within minutes.
Sandy, that is also done in Mexico! They rub Vicks Vapor rub in the center of both feet by the arch & cover w/ socks, plus rub Vicks on the chest. There's also a home-made mosquito bite reliever to calm down the itching. Use about a 4 in aloe-vera. Cut & split aloe vera. Warm it up in a skillet. Put it in a glass jar. Pour about 1 cup of rubbing alcohol. Add 1-2 peeled cloves of garlic. Close jar w/ lid. Shake jar to mix ingredients. Store in refrigerator as long as 5-6 mos. Use it whenever you need some mosquito bite or ant bite relief. NOT to be used on cuts, scrapes, burns, etc., ONLY to be used on mosquito bites AND ant bites for anti-itch relief.
ReplyDeleteDo you just cut a 4in piece off and split it down the middle and then heat. After that do you just put the two 4in pieces in the jar whole or do you cut it up or skin it?
DeleteMy grandmother was a true believer in this cough remedy and when I was younger she gave this to me when I had the terrible cough....and it did work.....she would cut an onion in half put in a bowl and sprinkle sugar on top....let it set on the counter and in about an hour the sugar brings the juices out of the onion and you take 2 tsp. of the juice.
ReplyDeleteAs a child this remedy was always sitting on the back of the cook stove during cold season.
DeleteThis looks great! Gonna give it a try. It's only babies under the age of 1 that can't have honey.
ReplyDeleteYes, only babies under 1. If the baby is a little over 1, you're safe but I'd keep an eye on them for signs of botulism just to be safe. I gave my baby honey within a week of turning 1 and she was fine.
DeleteVicks on the feet is a MUST...my son had RSV at 4 months old and spent 3 weeks in the hospital. The nurse we were blessed to have had been a nurse for 40 years. She would rub vicks on his feet and cover them with wool socks. They absorb and breathe better than cotton and she put vicks on his chest front and back. When a babe they kept stocking caps on because you loose heat through your feet and head. I do the vicks to this day. Also, honey and lemon in warm water. Honey coats and smooths and the acid in lemon kills bacteria. Like all good grandmothers we also do Chicken Broth. Warms you from the inside out and just makes you feel good all over.
ReplyDeleteEucalyptus oil on the bottom of their feet, its like the cough whisperer. works like a charm
Deleteon the hubby's too. lol
Hi, I'm glad you found something to help you children. I wanted to point out to you that honey contains spores and bacteria, which do not 'cook out'. Children under the age 2 should not be given honey, under normal circumstances, but if your children already have breathing issues, you might want to consult with your doctor before you continue this treatment. Especially if you're planning to make it again using unprocessed honey.
ReplyDeleteHi! Thanks for your comments! I should have mentioned in the post about botulism. Babies under 1 year should not have any honey because they run the risk of developing an infection called "Infant Botulism." Check out this link for more information http://kidshealth.org/parent/infections/bacterial_viral/botulism.html
DeleteI really enjoyed your article. More power to you!
ReplyDeleteHot Tea-like Remedy:
ReplyDeleteCough, congestion, and sore throat remedy - works in one or two doses every time:
1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar (with the mother is best)
1 tablespoon of honey
1/2 tablespoon of molasses
add hot water - drink as hot as possible for age
Note: add a couple of tablespoons of apple juice if it tastes too bad.
Will have to try this and see if it works for that pesky cough my kids get from allergies.
ReplyDeleteThere is a great non-mediciney syrup on the market called, Stodal. It's in the homeopatheic section of any pharmacy. It's for dry or productive coughs. It is honey based much like the recipies shared here. It's for kids but I take it and it works great.
ReplyDeletethis is great for a fever...add about three table spoons of ground ginger to as hot of bath water as you can stand. soak in tub for 20 min then go immediately to bed. cover up good and go to sleep. this helps to break the fever. only good for adults, as the water needs to be as hot as you can stand. it works wonders!
ReplyDeleteThis is great for scratchy throats. Our cook in the sorority house used to make it for us during rush when we would lose our voices. It's called Peppermint Tea. Just take a bag of peppermints and put it in a saucepan with equal parts water, lemon juice and honey (1 cup each). You can adjust if you think it needs more water. Cook it on medium heat until the peppermints melt and turn the tea pink. Drink it hot.
ReplyDeleteThis stuff rocks and can be kept in the refrigerator for a few days.
Honey should not be given to children under the age of 2!!
ReplyDeleteHi! Thanks for the comments! From my research, infants between 6 weeks and 6 months are the most suceptible to infant botulism, therefore the recommendation is that infants under one year shouldn't be exposed to honey. Here's a link to an informative article from the Government of Canada: http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/hl-vs/iyh-vsv/diseases-maladies/botu-eng.php But again, if you don't feel comfortable using it on your child under age two, please do what works best for you as a parent!
DeleteWhen one is sick with a cough, it is our instinct to find cures for it. Of course, who wouldn’t want to get rid of their cough right away? While it is easy to grab an over the counter medication to relieve yourself of coughing, it may contain certain chemical ingredients that poses harm to your health.
ReplyDeleteWhich is why we're looking for natural solutions to the problem.
DeleteIt's like they aren't even reading the rest of the posts.
DeleteIf you would cut out sugar and processed foods from your children's diet, you will be amazed to see how they will remain healthy. My daughters' teachers laughed at me at first when I told them we have a strict "no sugar" rule for my children. After a year of completely no sickness, the teachers now recommend it to other parents.
ReplyDeleteI have endured many comments of I am the "mean mom," but I get healthy, happy, and beautiful daughters who are learning how to choose and properly relate to food.
Glad to hear that your daughters are growing healthy. My three sons have had exposure to high fructose corn syrup, sugar, and other sweeteners and they have never been sick other than hay fever. They are not obese, they get regular exercise, we have great outdoor adventures and we aren't known as mean. This post was about a cough remedy not a life style. Some people get coughs and they are living a healthy life style. I want to thank Marya for this recipe.
DeleteI agree whole heartily. It's about cough syrup not life style. My girls are allowed sugar but if you put a plate of fruit and a bowl of candy in front of them, they'll eat the fruit every time. Healthy living is all about moderation and teaching them this young is important. I have 3 girls - 9, 7, & 2. This summer my husband, older 2 girls and will be running our 6th & 7th 5K. We started running last year. They are as healthy as can be. Thanks for the recipe. It'll work wonders for my 85 yr old Grandma with dementia.
DeleteWe don't use sugar or processed foods in our house, and my 4, 3, and 1 year old children have horrible coughs right now - if it's a bad virus going around, it doesn't always matter what you eat. The question here is how to relieve their cough while their body builds up the immune system. I'm making this first thing in the morning, although I'm 90% sure I'll get an "ew, that smells gross!" LOL!! We'll see. :-)
DeleteOh, and the Vicks on the feet is always my first line of defense - amazing!!
Great post. I love the eucalyptus oil suggestion, and the lemon all over the body. Great ideas. We don't eat much sugar but there is still sugar from everyone else and unfortunately we have gotten too many colds so I am glad for all the suggestions. I posted a simple thyme honey homemade cough syrup recipe too on my crafty healthy blog at www.apronsandapples.blogspot.com Hope you all get feeling better! And your little ones too! Kristy
ReplyDeleteI use a similar concoction: a few cloves of garlic covered in honey-keep it in a bottle and give the patient a few licks from a spoon now and then. I got it from a book: Simple Home Remedies for Common Ailments by Anne McIntyre
ReplyDeletemy dad use to make us onion tea, and then give us a some lemon juice mixed with honey to help our coughs, this one is all rolled in one:D
ReplyDeleteWay back when...my Dad used to make cough syrup...equal parts honey, lemon juice and whiskey. Not appropriate for kids (although we were given a spoonful at bedtime)but can certainly help adults sleep better :) Just keep in mind..this was 40 something years ago.
ReplyDeleteI still use your dad's remedy & it still works!!
DeleteI have something I found on the Internet a year ago that works everytime!! When my 2 yr old was about 1.5 he had a terrible cough. He gave it to me and we coughed for about 7 months. Not even kidding. nothing worked. There are no meds for babies for coughs. I was desperate for my sweet baby to sleep. (me too!) I found this remedy: Rub Vick's vaporub (I used the baby kind for my under 2 yr old) on the bottom of his feet and then put socks on him. I tried it and within a couple minutes he was sound asleep and not coughing until morning when it started all over again. I did the same Vicks on the bottom of the feet, then socks and it stopped again!! I also tried it on myself with regular vicks and it worked! LOVE it!!
ReplyDeleteMy grandfather made the honey and onions cough remedy for my mom when she was a kid - this was in the 1930s. She said it was very effective!
ReplyDeleteI use and have used for years honey and lemon on myself and the kids, honey is full of natural antibiotics (propoli)
ReplyDeletemy Brazilian neighbor told me to make it this way and its perfect for kids also because it taste good...
Take three or four table spoons of honey and put them in a jar and mix with a half a lemon juice, mix well until the mixture is no longer thick, take a tea spoon every time you feel like it... for very small children you can use a syringe without the needle to squirt it in their mouth.
Our tried and true cough medicine comes from my grandmother. My mom grew up with this as did my brothers, sister and myself. It works great and feels sooooo soothing. Add about 2 tbsp honey and about a tbsp of lemon juice to a shot of good whiskey. Heat in the microwave for a few seconds, just enough to make it warm. It lasts for awhile, somewhere between 3 and 4 hours.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting NOT TO GIVE TO BABIES UNDER 1 OR 2. When my great grandson was little and had a constant cough , I suggested honey to my granddaughter. She said her dr. had told her he is too young for honey. I had never heard that but was so glad her dr. knew about not giving it to babies.
ReplyDeleteTo Anonymous: Vick's ingredients are not harmful - they are natural! All it contains is camphor, menthol and eucalyptus oil (which you ARE recommending). People have used it for decades.
ReplyDeleteThe ingredients you've listed are only the ACTIVE ingredients. There are also several inactive ingredients in Vicks VapoRub that include petrolatum, which is harmful. Here are a couple of articles that will inform you some of the potential dangers that come from using Vicks:

Just thought you should know.
My poor son has had a minor cold cough thing going on the past few days. I read so much about the Vics on the feet with sock on and it has worked within10 mins. I also dabbled a little on his chest. I made sure to use Children's Vics because I wasn't sure if the adult Vis was stronger. Either way..it's working and I'll be using this technique for now. If people are worried about VIcs then I recommend the children's kind. Good Luck Parents!!!
ReplyDeleteGood luck to you too! We'll try the sock thing this winter!
DeleteThere are almost 10 to 15% toddlers who suffer from chronic coughing due to a variety of reasons such as asthma, allergies and reflux from acid. baby cough remedy

Small piece of fresh whole ginger boil with water then add lemon. .... miracle tea! Worked for me when I got bronchitis. .
ReplyDeleteMmm- I'll have to try that. A bit of honey would be nice too!
DeleteI tried the vapo rub and socks, it sure does work, will try the honey remedies too, thanks for sharing, to more cough free nights.
DeleteThat's good that it seemed to make a difference in their coughs. I bet it would have been even better with the fresh ginger and raw honey. (Maggie K.)
ReplyDeleteVicks is great on the feet. Just gave it to mt nephew who is sick all the time. I have a friend whom swears by Olive oil, Lemon juice and honey.
