Sugar Cone Christmas Tree

Alright, so I saw a pin about making this tree last winter, and I promised myself that I'd do it with H this year.  A friend of his came over to play for a morning this week, and I thought that it would be the perfect activity - it's a craft that adapts well enough for a 1.5 year old or a almost 4 year old!

Things you need:
1) Enough sugar cones for the number of people making the craft
2) bowls of Christmas-y candy (I used mixed candy of Snowmen and Trees, and then red and green M&M's)
3) Icing
4) Green food colouring
5) Cardboard squares about 5"x5", in the same number as the sugar cones
6) Aluminum Foil to cover the cardboard

Step 1: Make your icing (I used this Royal Icing recipe so that the icing would harden nicely) or get a jar of vanilla icing out of the cupboard.

Step 2: Add green food colouring to your icing - I had to use about 30 drops of green to get the colour I was looking for!

Step 3:  Cover your cardboard squares with foil.

Step 4:  Put some icing on the bottom (wide end) of the cone, and then place that end down on the foil-covered cardboard so that they'll stay in place (a little more).

Step 5:  Set your kiddies up at the table with the icing, and let them ice the tree with the green icing!  (My 1.5 year old needed a bit of help.  The almost 4-year old did pretty well by himself.)

Step 6: Decorate!

I didn't have any, but I've seen people use licorice laces to string around the tree like a garland - it looks great!

  1. That looks great! I've been thinking of trying that sometime. It looks so much easier than a gingerbread house!
