I got my dehydrator from a friend a few years ago, and I love it. There are so many different things you can do with a dehydrator.
Fruit
We love to do apples, bananas, peaches, strawberries and blueberries. There are lots more that we haven't tried yet. It's really nice when you find a whole bunch of fruit on clearance (ie. bananas) and you don't want to freeze it all, you can dehydrate it. It often tastes like candy, it's very portable, and it gives a lot of nutrients in a small package! You can also cook & puree some fruit, spread it on wax paper, and make fruit leather (or Fruit Roll Ups without the sugar).
Veggies
You can also do veggies - potatoes, tomatoes, onions, peppers, and even kale chips!
Then there's other things like jerky, yogurt, and even granola! There are so many great things they can do. Here's a great post from Kitchen Magic with some useful information.
Now there are people who don't have the space for it, and would rather do it in their ovens, which does work. But if you can store this somewhere, it's great to pull out when you need it.
If you would like one, I'd advise to borrow one first, or look second-hand (Kijiji or Value Village) - I don't think you need to pay full price for these - there are a lot out there!
Thanks for posting about dehydrators! I've had one for probably almost 20 years and have only used it once. I forgot I even have one until I read your blog! It would have been helpful for me to remember after our garden harvest this year. I did a bunch of canning for the first time by myself and it turned out quite well. I think next summer I'll put the dehydrator to use. I'm thinking it will be especially good for herbs, like cilantro, basil, thyme, and mint. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteThat's a great idea for the herbs! Congrats on all the canning, by the way! I'm too intimidated to do canning. I should try it though.
DeleteDehydrators are usually things people only think about as they watch infomercials on them! This is great info!
ReplyDeleteI know - it's something that I even forget about if I haven't used it in a while! Thanks for stopping by, Bonnie!
Deletei have never used a dehydrator earlier but heard about it from my friends. thanks for sharing this post. happy UBC.
ReplyDeleteNo problem! Thanks for stopping by again, Amar!
DeleteGreat post! I have never tried one, but it makes me think of a "Friends" episode whenever I hear about one. ;) I will keep my eyes open for one secondhand!
ReplyDeleteHa - I know - Crazy Eddie! Dehydrating water balloons! :)
DeleteI've never even thought about using a dehydrator - my mom has one (but she lives 3,000 miles away) and she sends me apricot chips every Christmas...my favorite!
