Sometimes it's a little intimidating to face an entire room of kids' things and organize/sort/throw out stuff. So I thought I'd just tackle one small area today - their little bookshelf. Since we had moved about 10 months ago, I had already gotten rid of so many books and toys, but we still had a lot. So if the books weren't of any sentimental value, or if we don't love the books, I've decided that they'll go to the second hand store. Here's the shelf before.
Here's the stack to be thrown out on the left, and donated on the right.
This is what I ended up with. I didn't even bother touching the toys yet - I'll get to that soon enough. We'll see how long the organized shelf lasts... but a quote keeps coming back to me. It's from FlyLady.net - she says "You can't organize junk." Basically, get rid of it all. Then things will stay clean/organized much longer.

DeleteI have been working on getting rid of junk! I used to be a classroom teacher, but now have my own online fitness business so I have been donating all my classroom items. I was very clinging about them, but getting rid of them has made my space feel so much better and help me focus on what I really love to do :)
ReplyDeleteIt's such a teacher thing, isn't it? I've taught various grades/subjects over the years, as well as homeschooled our 4 boys for a few years. I always think "Maybe I'll need this again sometime..."
DeleteI like your shelf with the smaller compartments. Our books end up sliding over and piling up, in their rooms and everywhere! At least they are being used... But we could definitely use a sorting of the less favourite ones.
ReplyDeleteOurs are everywhere too...I just tackled one main area. But really, having books all around kids isn't the worst thing in the world! Keeps them reading!
