I like the look of the leaves best when we use black construction paper for the frame, but I've run out (again), so we used red & orange this time around.
For this craft, you'll want to have clear contact paper, construction paper, tissue paper, and tape. Fold your construction paper in half along the short edge. Draw a simple half leaf the length and width of the paper - the bigger it is, the more room your little one will have to put tissue paper down. Cut the drawing out, and then, with the leaf still folded in half, cut the inside out, leaving 1/2" to 1" around the outer edge. When you open the leaf, you should have an outline of the leaf and a hole in the middle.
Cut out pieces of contact paper roughly the size of your leaf. with the sticky side facing up, peel back an inch of the backing and tape the top corners to the table. Continue to peel the backing, and tape the bottom corners down as well. Carefully lay the leaf on the contact paper. Now you're ready for the kids!
Have the kids put different (fall) coloured squares of tissue paper inside the frame of the leaf. It doesn't matter if they get some outside the frame - you'll be cutting that off. I left 3 boys to craft by themselves for about 5 minutes, and the great thing about this craft is that they can't really make much of a mess or destroy anything!! Once they've filled all of the empty spaces inside the leaf, cover with another sheet of contact paper, and cut out. You can also just cut it out without covering it again, but I like the look of it better when both sides are covered.
I think we'll do this a few more times yet this fall so that we can fill the window. I love the look of them! :)For some other ideas, check out the nativity
